BRITA water filters and cartridges are a popular consumer water filtration system manufactured by the The BRITA Products Company. BRITA filters aim to improve the quality and taste of tap water. There are three kinds of BRITA filters - pitchers, faucet mounts and refrigerator filters - all of which utilize activated carbon filters to reduce the levels of chlorine, lead, copper, cadmium and mercury levels in tap water. Medical studies have shown that large amounts of these impurities are linked to biological distress and disease.

[edit] Recycling Options

[edit] Europe

The European BRITA GmbH company has a take-back recycling program for its filter cartridges. Users of BRITA filters in Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, France and Switzerland can return used filter cartridges to dealers or distributors who will then return them to BRITA where all parts of the filter cartridges are reprocessed and then recycled.

[edit] North America

The Brita Products Company of North America is owned by The Clorox Company. As of now, there are no recycling options in North America. According to the information provided by takebackthefilter.org, the CEO of Clorox, Don Knauss, has stated that U.S. city waste management systems are not equipped to collect BRITA filters for recycling purposes, but that Clorox hopes to have a recycling option for users in 2009.
