Millions of cell phones are discarded every year. Cell phones contain a variety of toxic materials that can pollute land and water around landfills. Thankfully, old phones can be recycled or re-purposed. There are several recycling programs offered by major manufactures and carriers.

Nokia offers the We: Recycle program.

Sprint operates the Sprint Project Connect recycling program which recycles any old wireless phone or accessory. Participants can mail phones and accessories using a free pre-paid mailer that can be obtained at any of Sprints retail stores or printed out online at the project's website.

Motorola operates the Race to Recycle program, a collect, ship & reward program that enables kids and teens to raise money for their school. Individuals, companies and organizations can also participate. Motorola also offers prepaid shipping labels for general recycling purposes. They will accept any brand of wireless phone or phone accessories.

Staples offers cellphone recycling through a partnership with Collective Good.

Recellular is the largest recycler of cellular phones in the U.S. Recellular offers a variety of donation programs.
