Polystyrene peanuts are a common material used in packing and shipping applications. Also referred to as "packaging peanuts," "foam peanuts" and "plastic loose fill," polystyrene is difficult to collect and recycle do to it's lite weight and high cost.
Packing peanuts can be reused and many shipping stores will take them back. Look at the peanuts closely, some are made of starch and will easily biodegrade or dissolve in water and do not need to be recycled.
